After reviewing a number of very qualified bids, we came to the decision that the next SED Convention will be hosted by the Kappa Mu Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at the University of Georgia. It will be held the weekend of April 15-17, 2011. As we begin planning for this exciting event, we hope you will mark your calendars and make every effort to attend this year's Convention. 2011 SED Convention and 8th Note Bidders

Hello SED,

I trust you have all recovered well from an incredible SED Convention last weekend in Gainesville, FL. It was such a tremendous time for all brothers and sisters present. Well as many of you know, we left convention with out a 2011 Convention or 8th Note host for the next year. The Joint Actions committee outlined the necessary time frame for late bidders and have decided on May 15th as the deadline. That day is quickly approaching and we hope many of you all have reconsidered bidding for one of our districts key components. Guidelines to bid for both the 8th Note and the 2011 SED Convention have been emailed out. If you would like these documents, please feel free to contact me at anytime. We hope you all will get excited and consider getting involved on the district level more then your chapter has before. 2010 SED Convention Service Project Reminder

Sisters and Brothers of the Southeast District:

Convention is this weekend, which means that the 2010 SED Convention Service Project is fast approaching. Please look through your closets and bring your old, gently used clothes that you no longer wear to donate. Encourage your roommates, friends, and chapter members to do the same and bring all of the items with you to Convention.

After talking with an employee of St. Francis House, it was stressed that the shelter is desperately in need of new or gently used bath towels for the patrons. The shower facilities are used sometimes by 200 people a day so they quickly run out of bath towels; once the towels are gone, the shower facilities can't be used. New cotton underwear is also in high demand, for obvious reasons, so if it is within your budget, please think about buying new cotton underwear to be donated to St. Francis House.

Remember, the chapter that donates the most items will be recognized at Convention.

2010 SED Convention Service Project

Sisters and Brothers of the Southeast District:

At the upcoming convention at the University of Florida, the Southeast District of Tau Beta Sigma is hosting a clothing and toiletry drive for a local Gainesville homeless shelter, St. Francis House. St. Francis House is a non-profit organization with limited funds, so it depends on the generosity of the community to make a difference in the lives of the hungry and homeless in the Gainesville area.

The District will be collect new or gently used clothing and new toiletries to be donated to St. Francis House at the close of Convention. For sanitary reasons, St. Francis House can not accept opened or outdated toiletries or hygiene products. Here is a brief list of some of the items that St. Francis House is in need of:

Toiletries:
- Toothpaste
- Toothbrushes
- Shampoo
- Hair Combs
- Soap
- Spray Deodorants
- Bath Towels (new or gently used)
- Wash Clothes (new or gently used)

Clothing:
- Jackets
- Blankets
- Knit Caps
- Sweaters

Help the Southeast District make a difference in the community that we are visiting during the convention season. To prepare for the Clothing/Toiletry Drive at Convention, try holding a clothing drive and toiletry drive with your Band and bring the donated items with you to Convention. The TBS chapter that donates the most items for the Clothing/Toiletry Drive at District Convention will be eligible for a special award.

2010 Young Composer's Competition Winner

Sisters of the Southeast District:

As the VP of Special Projects for the SED of Tau Beta Sigma, it is my pleasure to announce the winner of the 2010 Young Composer's Competition, Robert Basilio from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His composition, entitled "Patriot Dream," blew away the judges with its wonderful mix of instrumentation and eloquent voicing. Robert will be awarded a scholarship of $200 through his University.

This year at District Convention, we will be discussing the progress of this annual competition now that we have completed its second year. If you have any ideas, opinions, or suggestions for the implementation of the Young Composer's Competition please feel free to email me or attend the Music Support committee meetings at SED Convention.

The SED has always been known for our spirit. One of the ways we show that spirit is through our District T-Shirt. You could be the one to design the T-shirt that will be worn by sisters across the Southeast for the next biennium! 2010 SED Scrap Book

Sisters and Brothers of the Southeast District of Tau Beta Sigma,

It is that time of year again to start planning for your chapter page in the 2009-2010 TBS SED Scrapbook. The Scrapbook is hosted this year by the Theta Rho chapter at Bethune-Cookman College. The district is asking for one scrapbook page from each chapter and colony in the district. The theme this year is "Sisters at work and at play," so please include pictures of your chapter serving the bands or the community and also pictures of fun times in sisterhood. The current dimensions of the SED Scrapbook are 19.5" x 16.5". Please make sure that your page is cut to these dimensions so that it can be added to the Scrapbook seamlessly.

Each chapter/colony has two options for their scrapbook page:
Option 1: Make your own Scrapbook page. These pages can be mailed in to Theta Rho and received by March 22nd or submitted in person at either at DLC (February 26th and 27th) or the Friday night of Convention (April 9th).
Option 2: Provide pictures and decortations and have Theta Rho compete the chapter's page. The decorations and pictures can be mailed to Theta Rho and received by March 5th or they can be submitted in person at DLC (February 26th and 27th)

Young Composer's Competition

Sisters and Brothers:

As the VP of Special Projects for the SED of Tau Beta Sigma, it is my pleasure to announce the winner of the 2009 Young Composer's Competition, Douglas Farrell of Georgia State University. His Wind Ensemble composition entitled "Structure" blew away the judges with its wonderful mix of instrumentation and eloquent voicing. Douglas will be awarded a scholarship of $350 through his University.We had many well-written submissions and this was a great start to our annual Young Composer's Competition.

It is also my pleasure to announce the 2010 Young Composer's Competition. A registration form for each participant is due by October 1, 2009 and finals submissions are due by February 1, 2010. NEW SED Historians

Auriel James from the Epsilon Chi chapter at South Carolina State University will be our SED Historian North and Sal Parillo from the Zeta Psi chapter at the University of Central Florida will be our SED Historian South They will be serving you all while working with the SED Council to begin recording all events that take place in the SED and to start finding and restoring the history of our past. National Convention Flights

Hey SED,

Here are some pointers on buying flight tickets :) I have had a number of people ask me about cheap flights and here is the info i can give :) Hope this helps you guys out and i hope that we can get more people signed up for nationals :)

There are a number of ways to find cheaper flights. The best thing that i can recommend, is to fly out of a large airport. There are 3 that i can recommend in our area: Atlanta, Charlotte, and Orlando. Obviously, these require a bit of a drive but its worth it for the money you can save from flying out of a smaller airport such as Columbia, or Charleston. I book my flights on www.priceline.com. They normally always have really good flight prices and will find them cheap for you :). I would recommend finding someone or a couple of people to drive with you to split the cost of gas to get to the airport. I just looked and if you fly out of Atlanta, you can get flights for as low as $264. That is really good for a flight ticket these days. (Orlando is normally cheaper)

I would also recommend avoid traveling on Sunday. If that means, stay a little longer or leave early, you can save some money! I did the search from Tuesday July 21-Sunday July 26. You can get the hotel rate at the convention site for up to 3 days prior or after convention so that is always an option. I will post this email to the group so that everyone can see it and hopefully get motivated to buy flights.

Don't forget to register for national convention which now costs $140. Thats not bad!! Please let me know if you have any further questions. I am always glad to help! Good luck and i hope to see you at Nationals :)
